This year’s Met Gala, which was held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, was a rousing success. The theme for this year was “Camp: Notes on Fashion,” and the attendees did not disappoint, by any stretch of the imagination.
For those who are not familiar with the Met Gala, it is an annual costume party hosted by the Costume Institute. The event is a veritable who’s who of the celebrity elite. Everyone went all-out to embrace this year’s theme as much as possible. Although it is easy to associate words like “tacky” or “trashy” with campiness, that was certainly not the case.
Campiness is merely fun, free-spirited, and pushes the boundaries. Not only did attendees dress in a manner that was indicative of this year’s theme, but they also wore campy jewelry that helped drive the point home. Here is some of the best Met Gala Camp jewelry of 2019!
Lily Collins
Lily Collins wore a puffy, ruffled off-white dress that made its own statement. So, she needed jewelry that was going to be able to stand up to it. Lilly chose a Cartier Magnitude High Jewelry necklace with stunning emeralds, rock crystal onyx, black lacquer, and diamonds – all set in platinum with matching earrings. On her finger, she wore a coordinating Pluie de Cartier diamond ring set in 18-karat white gold.
Jennifer Lopez
J-Lo channeled the past with her flapper-inspired ensemble. To offset her silver beaded dress, she wore a Harry Winston “Purple Dragon” necklace around her neck. The stone was a whopping 65.32-carat purple sapphire as well as 129.48 carats of round brilliant pear and marquise-shaped diamonds, all set in platinum. As if the one-of-a-kind piece was not enough by itself, she also sported an array of platinum and white diamond jewelry. Jennifer also wore vintage chandelier earrings, diamond bracelets, and two diamond rings. Altogether, these pieces added an additional 182.02 carats.
Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga is well-known for her over-the-top attire. She was stunning at the gala in a bright pink ball gown, one of her four outfits for the evening. But her dress was not nearly as eye-catching as the jewelry she wore. Gaga wowed the crowd with her Tiffany & Co. jewelry that, combined, are worth close to two million dollars. Her earrings were simple diamond and platinum studs that allowed her to showcase the other pieces she wore.
On one finger she donned a six-carat pink sapphire and on another was a five-carat spinel and diamond ring set in platinum. A third ring was a 13-carat rubellite and diamond, which was also set in platinum. Although all three of these rings were breathtaking, none of them compared to the 15-carat diamond and platinum ring she also wore on her right hand.
Naomi Campbell
Naomi Campbell is always stunning. To accentuate her pink dress, she was decked out in jewelry from the Italian jewelry house, Bulgari. Her high-fashion jewelry consisted of earrings and bracelets – both adorned with rubies and diamonds. Here, the highlight piece was the circa-1959 diamond heritage bracelet on her wrist. It was indeed a throwback to the past with a modern twist.
Penelope Cruz
Penelope Cruz knows how to camp up hoop earrings. Her ears were adorned with hoop earrings that consisted of pear and marquise Swarovski created diamonds as well as Swarovski white topaz set in 18-carat Fairtrade white gold. These seemingly understated hoops simply glistened in beauty on Cruz.
Gemma Chan
Gemma Chan went all-out for her camp jewelry. Rather than going with the everyday choices of a necklace, earrings, finger rings, and a bracelet, she went for a headdress. The late and legendary Elizabeth Taylor inspired her custom-made piece. The dress was opulent, grand, stunning, and just simply gorgeous.
